  • Our Grand Tasmania tour is available as an extension to the Grand Australia and all three of our New Zealand tours. Please see the panel on page 83 for the departure dates and combinations available. We offer a 9 and 12 day version to link in with our other tours. The 9 day tour starts on the afternoon of day 4 in Hobart. Please note there maybe some slight amendments to this tour at a later stage due to ongoing developments.

Launceston to Launceston (GTA.1)



Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Launceston (HD)
Choose to fly from Sydney or Melbourne on our included flights with QANTAS.  On arrival at Launceston airport, you will be met and transferred* to your hotel, This afternoon enjoy a guided tour of historic Woolmers Estate, an impressive colonial mansion and home to the National Rose Garden. Continue to the famous Cataract Gorge Reserve and take a ride on the world’s longest single span chairlift.

Day 2: Launceston – Bicheno (B,D)
Journey to Tasmania’s spectacular east coast and visit Bridestowe Lavender Farm to discover how lavender is harvested and processed by the largest and oldest plantation in the southern hemisphere (note: lavender is in bloom December and January only). Visit St Helens and continue to Freycinet National Park, noted for its spectacular coastal scenery of striking cliffs, sheltered bays and pristine beaches. This evening, join a guided tour of a private fairy penguin colony and watch as they return from a day’s fishing (colony numbers may vary).

Day 3: Bicheno – Port Arthur (B,D)
This morning visit the village of Swansea to see the convict-built Spikey Bridge. Continue to the Tasman Peninsula and visit the Port Arthur Historic Site, play the Lottery of Life to understand life as a convict. Join your expert guide for a walking tour of this once notorious penal settlement and cruise around the harbour to witness the Isle of the Dead.

Day 4: Port Arthur – Hobart (B)
Stop at the Tasman Arch and Devil’s Kitchen before heading into Richmond. Take a step back in time as you visit Australia’s most delightful Georgian village known for its heritage listed sandstone bridge on the Coal River. Continue to Hobart and mix with the locals as you explore the colourful stalls of the bustling Salamanca Market. Visit Bonorong Wildlife Park where you will meet some of Tasmania’s native animals including Tasmanian devils, wombats and echidnas.

Day 5: Hobart (B,D)
Today is a SCENIC FREECHOICE day where you choose your preferred activity from: A cruise to Peppermint Bay; tour the Huon Valley; or a guided Historic Walk followed by a River Derwent cruise.  Tonight is a SCENIC FREECHOICE Dining evening – choose from: Mures Seafood Restaurant; The Restaurant Tasman at the Grand Chancellor; or the Ball and Chain Grill, Tasmania’s only real charcoal grill.

Day 6: Hobart – Strahan (B,D)
Travel to Mount Field National Park, one of Tasmania’s most popular National Parks. Stroll through lush rainforest to the stunning Russell Falls before continuing to Lake St Clair, Australia’s deepest natural freshwater lake. Enjoy a short walk whilst taking in the stunning scenery. Continue to the copper mining town of Queenstown where you will board the famous West Coast Wilderness Railway for your journey through pristine forest to Strahan.

Day 7: Strahan (B,L)
Board your luxury cruise vessel and enjoy the view from your window seat as you cruise breathtaking Macquarie Harbour to Hells Gate, where the harbour meets the ocean. Travel along the serene Gordon River and visit Heritage Landing for a guided walk through the rainforest amongst trees thousands of years old. Rejoin your cruise vessel for a sumptuous buffet lunch. Your journey continues with a visit to Sarah Island, where your expert guide will regale you with stories of the convicts’ lives on the island as you walk through the settlement ruins. This evening join the local theatre group as they perform the dramatic and true story of an amazing escape from Sarah Island in the tale of ‘The Ship That Never Was’.

Day 8: Strahan – Cradle Mountain (B,D)
Depart Strahan and journey through rugged wilderness to the stunning alpine scenery of World Heritage listed Cradle Mountain – Lake St Clair National Park. Join your local guide as you travel to beautiful Dove Lake.  Today is a SCENIC FREECHOICE day where you choose your preferred activity from: a guided walk along King Billy Track; a  pampering at the Waldheim Spa; a local wine and cheese tasting; a guided native night life tour; or a picnic hamper.

Day 9: Cradle Mountain – Smithton (B,D)
Enjoy the scenic drive to Stanley, a quaint English village nestled at the foot of the towering volcanic core, ‘The Nut’. Visit the historic grazing property of Woolnorth and enjoy a guided tour of Tasmania’s largest wind farm. Learn about the project and see the massive windmills used to produce electricity. Stop at Cape Grim, situated on the tip of the rugged west coast, to embrace the world’s cleanest air.

Day 10: Smithton – Launceston (B)
Tour the charming Allendale Gardens and continue on to Sheffield, where you will have leisure time to explore the spectacular street murals. This afternoon treat your tastebuds with a visit to the delightful Anvers Chocolate Factory to sample and view the chocolate making process. Continue to the Ashgrove Cheese Factory and learn how cheese is traditionally made. Sample some of the varieties of cheeses before returning to Launceston. This evening is yours to explore the many restaurants in Launceston.

Day 11: Launceston (B,HD)
Today is a SCENIC FREECHOICE day where you choose from: Tamar River cruise and lunch or a Tamar Valley guided tour. This afternoon travel to the Tasmanian Gourmet Sauce Company to sample their delicious range of locally made sauces, jams and conserves. This evening enjoy a relaxing farewell dinner.

Day 12: Launceston (B)
This morning visit the popular country market in historic Evandale (time permitting). Travel to Ross, a National Trust classified town and learn more about its turbulent past and view the convict-built bridge. Transfer* to Launceston airport for your included QANTAS flight to either Sydney or Melbourne.
